Every year, there is a team of 8 CAs (Campus Community Advisors) Chinese students carefully selected to provide support and guidance to international students new to China and our Nanyan campus. They plan events, hold regular Chinese Corners, and serve as go-to people for student with questions or issues on campus, on more generally in Shenzhen or China. Get to know them each a little better below.
Kelly Kou, 3L student at the School of Transnational Law
Chinese name: 寇尚洋子
Hometown: Xi’an, Shaanxi
Hobbies: Hiking, swimming, and tennis
What do you like to do on weekends?
Go off campus to see different things and come back and have a good rest. Or just rest.
Favorite food: All kinds of fruit, my parents’ cooking, ice cream… the list is endless.
Favorite place in Shenzhen: Shenzhen Bay Park, Tanglang Mountain, Xichong Beach
Why did you join the CA program?
I want to talk to people from different parts of the world, get their insights and share my views. CA program is an excellent chance for me to know them more and have deep conversations. We held various events and help them settle down. From this process, I can know better of the international students and even the world. Some of them will remain lifelong friends.
Advice for internationals: Mix with the Chinese students, starting from your classmates. They want to talk to international students but they are too shy to start a conversation. Ask your Chinese classmates to help you with your travel plans. It is a perfect chance to become friends with them.
Conan Jiang, 3rd year student at the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering
Chinese name: 蒋一峰
Hometown: Too many hometowns. Born in Inner Mongolia, grew up in Liaoning Province, which are both located in the north of China. However, My Grandpa come from Shanghai.
Hobbies: Can’t live without music, I prefer EDM (Trance and Home Style), Remix, Neo-classical and Classical Music. Ping pong, traveling, and photography–light and shadow are wonderful things.
What do you like to do on weekends?
First of all, sleep until naturally waking up. Then, read or watch movies. Try anything that I haven’t done before to make a difference.
Favorite food: Appetite varies from time to time, but currently prefer spicy hot pot. By the way, McDonalds is always good with international standards when you indeed have no choice!

Why did you join the CA program?
I hope to be friends with all the international students and help them when they need me. I would like to communicate with foreigners even though I’m not skilled in English. I’m eager to know what you all think of China and what its drawbacks are that to need to be improved. I’d also like to share different cultures, learn from the excellent international students and hope to behave like a native English speaker though it’s quite tough.
A final word for internationals: I hope you can enjoy your valuable time on this campus and make more Chinese friends. I’m very glad to teach you Chinese and answer any questions concerning Chinese culture and social questions in China. Actually, it is not teaching but communicating.

What do you like to do on weekends?
KTV, gym, watch movies at the theater, Shenzhen sightseeing

Why did you join the CA program?
I would like to help international students with their campus life and study. Through this program, I can make friends with international students. We can have a better understanding of each other though we share different backgrounds and cultures; they can learn from me about eastern culture and I can know about western cultures from them.

Shopping and reading books
Favorite food: Spicy food of Hunan Province is my favorite type. Among all spicy foods, I like “Shredded Pork with Green Peppers” most.
What’s your favorite place in Shenzhen?
University town of Shenzhen, of course. I’ve spend nearly three years here, I love it!
Why did you join the CA program?
At the very beginning, the reason I joined the CA program was that I wanted to make friends with international students. But now, after I participated in this program for over a year, I think there are more reasons that I choose to stay. One reason is that we CAs are a harmony team; we cooperate with each other, and we share the same belief that our work can really provide some convenience for international students. It’s fulfilling when you know that your work is meaningful.

The CAs’ first event for the semester is a group hiking trip up Tanglang Mountain on October 22nd! They also host regular Chinese Corners on campus to help international students practice their Mandarin skills.
